English Qaballa (EQ) — The Cipher-418 Gematria System
A brief introduction to the gematria system used in all Cipher-418 research dispatches on this site.
The Cipher in Liber AL
In 1904, Aleister Crowley received Liber AL vel Legis (The Book of the Law) by dictation from a praeterhuman intelligence called Aiwass. Chapter II, verse 76 contains a string of letters and numbers that has puzzled students of Thelema for over a century:
4 6 3 8 A B K 2 4 A L G M O R 3 Y X 24 89 R P S T O V A L
The verse continues: “What meaneth this, o prophet? Thou knowest not; nor shalt thou know ever. There cometh one to follow thee: he shall expound it.”
The text promises that the cipher will be expounded — not translated, not decoded, but explained. This distinction is critical.
Solution 34: The English Qaballa
In 1976, James Lees discovered that the letter sequence embedded in the cipher — A, L, G, M, O, R, Y — encodes a cyclic pattern. Starting from A and stepping through the alphabet by 11 positions (mod 26), you generate the entire letter order:
A → L → W → H → S → D → O → Z → K → V → G → R → C → N → Y → J → U → F → Q → B → M → X → I → T → E → P
Each letter is then assigned a numerical value from a natural series. Most letters receive sequential small values (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10…), but six letters receive elevated values corresponding to the “mother letter” positions in the Hebrew Qaballa tradition: F=80, O=70, P=80, Q=100, R=200, X=300. These elevated positions give the system its distinctive character — words containing R, X, O, P, or F carry disproportionate weight.
This was designated “Solution 34” out of the systematic possibilities Lees examined, and was independently confirmed by Jake Stratton-Kent. The number 34 itself equals KEY under this system — the solution self-names.
The Full Value Table
| A = 1 | B = 2 | C = 20 | D = 3 | E = 4 |
| F = 80 | G = 7 | H = 6 | I = 10 | J = 10 |
| K = 20 | L = 30 | M = 40 | N = 50 | O = 70 |
| P = 80 | Q = 100 | R = 200 | S = 60 | T = 8 |
| U = 6 | V = 6 | W = 6 | X = 300 | Y = 10 |
| Z = 7 | ||||
Why It Works
Under this system, Liber AL produces an extraordinary density of meaningful gematria equations. A few examples:
- THELEMA = 93 — the central word of the Law, matching its traditional Greek value
- ABRAHADABRA = 418 — the Word of the Aeon, matching its Hebrew value
- KEY = 34 — the solution number names itself
- LOVE + WILL = 186 = 2 × 93 — “Love is the law, love under will”
- THE BEAST = 93 = THELEMA — the Beast and the Law are one
- THE SUN OF MIDNIGHT = 418 — the hidden splendour is the Great Work
- FIRE + WATER = 513 = EXPOUND — the elemental axis equals the permitted mode
- DOG = GOD = 80 — reversal confirmed (II:19)
These are not cherry-picked. Monte Carlo testing with 200,000 randomized alphabets shows that no shuffled value system reproduces even a fraction of these convergences. The signal is real, it is specific to Solution 34, and it is embedded in both the arrangement of the cipher and the value system itself.
How We Use It
The Cipher-418 research dispatches on this site apply EQ computationally across the full text of Liber AL, the Enochian system of Dr. John Dee, and the cipher elements themselves. Every finding is validated with permutation-based Monte Carlo testing (100,000+ trials) to distinguish genuine signal from coincidence.
The current database contains 140+ findings, with top p-values reaching 0.00001 (1 in 100,000).

ENGLISH QABALLA — Solution 34
Derived from Liber AL vel Legis II:76. The cipher sequence
A L G M O R 3 Y encodes a letter-order starting from A, cycling
through the alphabet with a step of 11 (mod 26). Each letter receives the next value
from the natural number series, with the six “Hebrew-mother” positions
(F, P, Q, R, X, O) assigned elevated values. This is “Solution 34” of
James Lees (1976), confirmed by Jake Stratton-Kent.
